I commenced my career in 1998 as an exploration and mining geologist in Western Australia, after which I moved into the demonstration and sale of large mining rock drilling equipment based in NSW and later in Queensland where I was responsible for marketing this high value equipment to mining and quarrying companies across Australia and the Asia Pacific. Then taking up the role of Commercial Manager for the world’s largest commercial explosives company, responsible for commercial management; including pricing and contractual issues in the sale of explosives to the mining industry throughout Australia. This was followed with a short contract as the strategic account manager of BHP Billiton for a global electrical engineering company. Each of these positions has provided me with invaluable hands on exposure to the Australian resources industry and access to most of Australia’s mining operations.

Relocating to Europe in 2003, I initially spent time in Germany exposed to environmental protection through the management of early detection forest fire surveillance systems, and then to the United Kingdom responsible for the marketing and promotion of both the commercial and public good activities of the Natural Environment Research Council’s British Geological Survey (BGS). Also serving as the BGS representative on the UK’s Environmental Industries Commission, and undertaking consultancies for the UK Department for International Development in Sierra Leone. Then before returning to Australia I enjoyed two years at the University of Leicester managing an EU funded project undertaking remote sensing and the utilisation of satellite technologies.

Returning to Australia in 2010, I was engaged in research management at the Australian National University, responsible for the day-to-day operations of an Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence across seven Australian institutions and international collaborators.
